The 2016 International Harp Festival will be held at the beautiful San Damiano Retreat Center in Northern California. We will bring together many of the harp community’s best clinicians and performers. Our mission is to educate and inspire you and to connect you to harpists from around the globe.

The festival will include One Day Intensive workshops as well as numerous 1 - 2 hour workshops. Topics include healing harp, Celtic and world music, liturgical harp, improvisation, and much more.

You will have time throughout the day to shop for harps, music, and accessories, and meet and mingle with other participants, the performers, and facilitators.

Every evening you will enjoy concerts featuring harpists performing The Blues, Straight Ahead Jazz, World Music, Folk and Classical repertoire.

Motoshi Kosako

Born in Matsuyama City, Japan. He started his musical training on the piano and also the guitar. In Tokyo he played the acoustic and electric guitar in professional Jazz bands and the Swing Journal magazine described him as “one of the most remarkable young Jazz musicians.”

In 1997, Mr. Kosako moved to the United States and soon after he started playing the harp. He is primarily self- taught with a few lessons from Dominique Piana (the professor of Holly Name College, Oakland, CA) to learn fundamental harp technique. He is currently the principal harpist of Stockton Symphony Orchestra and the featuring soloist for 2009-2010 season.

His latest music innovation is improvisation and composition for the harp. In 2007 he won the second place in Lyon & Healy International Jazz & Pop Harp Competition and received the “Best of Sacramento” award from Sacramento Magazine as “Best Jazz Hound in Tie and Tail”. Sacramento Magazine says, “Kosako plays with fluid, modern style that evokes Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea.” His groundbreaking style is also noted in Harp Column as “Motoshi Kosako, a Japanese native whose introspective soloing was reminiscent of Keith Jarrett.” He plays numerous original compositions and standards as solo or in trio and quartet. Since 2008 he started touring Japan to give performances and various workshops and he is considered as the most influential Jazz harpist in Japan.

In 2002 and 2003, he recorded two classical harp albums, Celestial Harp I and Celestial Harp II. In April 2008, he has released his first Jazz Album, Naked Wonder with his trio, Bill Douglass (bass, bamboo flute) and Daryl Van Druff (drums). In 2010 he has released his solo album “Living harp” in Japan and producing new album “ Place in the heart” with Grammy ward winning musician, Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn, soprano sax, bass clarinet) and made their record debut in Japan distributed by KING RECORDS INTERNATIONAL.
